Barrels

Ferocactus cylindraceus

Ferocactus wislizenii

Ferocactus wislizenii

Ferocactus cylindraceus
It's Barrel Cactus blooming season, and all of my barrels have flowers now. Each cactus, even those in the same species have slightly different color flowers. The flowers are long lasting, and the Barrels will continue producing flowers until late September.
Ferocactus wislizenii Fruit/Seedpod
This seedpod was still on the cactus from last year's flower. It sometimes takes a whole year before the seedpods dry and drop off the cactus. I split it open so you can see the numerous black seeds inside the pod.

the barrels are great... I've been looking into them lately, as quite a few can survive in this climate, but they're very difficult to find here and too expensive when you do. If you ever want to get rid of those seed pods, send them to me!
I remember reading something -it seems one of the the colleges uprooted a barrel, F. wislizinii if I remember correctly, and stored it, on it's side on a shelf. It sat there for over 35 years, and it still had green living tissue. They were trying to see how long it would take for the plant to use up its stored water. Kind of interesting....

Gorgeous cactus blooms!! The seedpod photo is amazing - I have never seen a dry cactus seedpod and didn't realize how many seeds were inside!

I love your Cactus Barrel blooms today Aiyana. I'm especially fond of the Ferocactus cylindraceus with deep golden petals & vibrant orange-red centers. Beautiful Bloomin' Tuesday blooms! :)

Your cactus blooms are beautiful! When I first moved into this home there was an area that had lots of cactus plants. I dug them all up and gave them to someone because I didn't want cactus, after looking at your blooms and anothers these past weeks on Blooming Tuesday I am kinda regretting doing so!
Lovely flowers, thanks for sharing!
Love, Ann

I was interested to learn there are different 'seasons' for catus. With some blooming early and some late. The barrels have lovely blloms and rich colors-so pretty!

amazing, breathtaking blooms. and i have to admit that that seedpod would have gone straight into my mouth. i would just have to taste it to see if it's as good as it looks. ;-p

As always - great pics. If I had to chose one I'd pick the Ferocactus wislizenii

I think I did it before - read ferocious instead of ferocactus. But both would be correct if you were careless handling them.

Beautiful desert flowers. You don't need a wet climate for colour! Thanks for the photos.
