Waiting for Fall

I have around 100 potted cacti sitting on my north-facing patio, patiently waiting for fall. Every summer I move all these pots to this location because the sun is just too intense for most of them, which are not native. In the fall, I place them where they can get full sun.
If we have a cold spell in winter, I will move the cold sensitive cacti back under the patio and cover them.

I think the variations in spines and shapes and colors are fascinating, but it is a lot of work to move these pots back and forth. I really have too many cacti that are sun or cold sensitive. Perhaps I should consider a greenhouse!

We had another quarter inch of rain last week, so several cacti decided to put out another round of flowers. This Argentine Giant is ready to bloom. I took this photo at about noon, but did miss the open flowers, which occurred after dusk. I think the buds are as pretty as the flowers in their own way.

Oh I love that Argentine Giant- It is my favorite of everything I've seen from you so far! What do you cover your cactus with in the winter? This winter will be my first since I really started adding to my collection and I am a little nervous about getting everything through the colder months!
I actually have considered closing off my carport with plastic as a temporary greenhouse over the winter!

I'm not usually a cactus person, but like the different types grouped together.

Happy Bloomin' Tuesday.

I do think you need a greenhouse! At least they don't need to be watered too often. The colors and textures of all those cacti is amazing. Glad to hear you got a little rain. Jean

The things we do for our plants! But aren't you glad you do? They seem to reward all your hard work with the loveliest blooms. The Argentine Giant's buds remind me of another flower-can't remember which one though. It it gorgeous.

Hi Aiyana! I sure missed you! Hope you had loads of fun! I feel for you with all this work of moving the pots! They are worse than children...and to have 100 children...oh no!!! LOL.

Knowing nothing about cacti I am thoroughly enjoying reading your blog! What can you say about a plant that blooms shortly after getting what we would call a small amount of rain? Wonderful, right!

I never cease to be amazed by how many cacti you have to take care of. They are all so beautiful even when not in flower.

those look beautiful, I collected a few when I was down your way about 12 years ago froma construction site, they were going to doze over them and let me dig some up before they started plowing, so do you grow any in your yard? I've always wanted to go back and collect seeds to plant,

Splinkster,
Yes, I have around 150 in pots--50 of them don't need to be moved in summer as they are either native or have adapted. I have another--maybe 50--species in my yard. Those planted don't need the same level of care as the potted ones.

I guess I never would have thought that it could get too hot for some cacti. The different forms and colors are beautiful. And welcome back. :)

I'm always jealous of the cacti you have... I am currently gathering the supplies together to make a greenhouse to keep many of mine over the winter, and also use for sprouting seeds for next spring. I wish I had more that I could just leave outside, but my winters here are unpredictable, usually too cold and wet.

The Argentine Giant buds are beautiful. I can't quite imagine hauling around so many pots, but it's worth it. The cacti are all beautiful - each it its own way!

Such a lot of cacti in pots! Such a lot of joy to see and watch them. And such a lot of work to move them for winter (and I thought you had mild winter days !).
