The Nature of Glass

Desert Botanical Garden Wildflower Trail. It's a great time of year in the Sonoran Desert!

I don't often post photos beyond my own garden, but I wanted to show some wonderful sights from my most recent Desert Botanical Garden tour. There is a lot going on in the Garden this time of year, and the main draw is Chihuly: The Nature of Glass exhibition. There are many glass sculptures placed among the surrounding cacti and succulents to complement the nearby plants.

Chihuly's work is found in museums worldwide. This is his first garden exhibition in an outdoor desert environment. I've included only a small portion of the sculptures featured in the exhibition. It's one of the most popular events the Garden has ever featured. To see this exhibition at night is even more spectacular.

I must like all the tall, simple vertical sculptures the best, because I have more photos of them than any of the others. I also like their colors the best. Pudgeduck also went along on this tour, and she has photos of other sculptures on her blog.

The DBG is located near the sandstone buttes of Papago Park, which provides a beautiful backdrop for the plants in the Garden.

Aiyana .. this art work is amazing ! I especially like the first one .. it is so fauceted and intricate with all of the pieces joining to make one exceptional statement ! .. the simple shard like pieces standing so straight and tall against the plants .. perfect ! .. to see a sunset take place with these pieces mixed with the plants would be stunning : )

I would so love to visit this garden during the Chihuly exhibit. There are several photos of it on Flickr, but I think your photos are some of the best I've seen! I love the blue, slender glass sculptures. The Garden looks so beautiful with the spring flowers blooming.

Oh, I am so jealous of all the bloggers who have posted about this display. Your pics really make me wish I could see it in person too. Just gorgeous.

It's fasinating to see gardens that are different from your own. I'm curious can you get annuals for the cooler temps that will give that extra color if wanted ?
You know like we do in the summer.

The art work reminds me of a piece I saw at Borgota's Casino in Atlantic City...must be from the same artist. Very cool.

Patsi,
Yes, we do that in late fall and winter, rather than summer. Stuff like Sweet Potato Vine, Creeping Charlie, Petunias, Geraniums, etc.
The Belagio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas also has glass sculptures on the ceiling that I think are done by Dale Chihuly. I should research that and make sure.

I have a feeling the photos don't do those justice. How I wish I could have seen them in person.
