Pitiful Plant Post

Echinopsis 'Shere Kahn'

Although this is Echinopsis blooming time, the few small flowers that manage to bloom are on their way to wilt before they are completely open. I'll be so glad to see an end to this long, miserable summer! No sign of it yet--temperatures promise to be in the 107 degree range for the rest of this week, with night time temperatures around 84 degrees. Of course, the light is looking a little different as the angle of the sun slightly changes, but that's the extent of any sign of fall. Actually, it won't get nice here until mid-October, so I have a ways to go before there's any relief.

I spend most of my time in the house organizing drawers, closets, paperwork and craft supplies, and other tasks that most people do in winter in other climates. I'll be glad to get outside again in another six weeks. However--night time temperatures come down ten degrees in mid September, so I'll enjoy some evening patio sitting a bit sooner!

  1. I am just waiting (not too patiently) for that first day of fall, when I plan to be outside all day. Period. Opening all of the windows, and lighting a new apple scented candle to celebrate!!!

I am waiting for Autumn as well .. to have landscaping done .. and yes, I also notice the change in the sun rise angle of our sky too. It is nice to see : )

  3. We are having a 'cold front' coming through Thurs which will lower us about 5 degrees. Ugh, summer. Looks like this plant is trying to bloom anyway!

  4. You will most certainly enjoy your upcoming trip to Denver---we are a good 20 degrees cooler than you've been in Phoenix, with nighttime lows now getting down into the 50s. Enjoy!

  5. Wow - your nighttime highs are warmer than our daytime hights. No wonder your little flowers wilt so quickly. Have fun doing your projects! Paula

  6. We were at the dog park on Sunday, and the dogs were running and running like crazy, and I said to Mark how nice it was. He said, yeah it's nice, it's only 100 degrees.

Funny how you adjust, isn't it. Sunday at the dog park seemed just perfect.

It has been a HOT summer.

  7. We've managed to avoid the worst of Santa Ana summer heat so far here in San Diego. Still, this is the time of year I begin to dream about rain, and my melons, pumpkins and winter squash have all thrown in the towel. At least you have clean closets to show for your work.

  8. I personally can't wait for the heat to break here... of course we have more humidity than you do... I like the Echinopsis flower... I don't have any cactus bloomin at the moment.

  9. We've been hot and humid here for a week. Yuck! I haven't spent much time in the garden. The orange bloom is beautiful! Jean

  10. Still, it's a pretty color. :) As miserable a summer as you've had- that's how great ours has been. I know you don't want to hear that. But while you are enjoying the winter we will probably have snow up to our elbows.

  11. That bloom looks pretty against the blue pot. Your summers are hotter and longer than ours. But still I "hibernate" indoors for a few weeks during summer. Looking forward to cool temps in fall. :)

  12. I guess baking is out of the question.
Sorry to hear that the heat is so miserable. You need a summer home.
It is a pretty orange bloom though.
    Stay cool.

  13. You have the opposite of us. We are inside all winter and outside all summer. It must be very frustrating at times I am sure. Hope it eases up soon!

  14. I think everyone is waiting for this summer to be over. I certainly am. I just wish I could get up some enthusiasm for the indoor stuff you talk about.

  15. It sure has been a hot summer- even Tucson has been hotter and drier than normal. I am in Maricopa today but rained Friday in Tucson- I got half inch in my yard. I'm about ready to give up on a good monsoon and head in to fall too!

  16. It's a real challenge, isn't it? Cacti are amazing, producing blooms from so little.
