One Last Push

Unless we get more rain soon, I imagine these will be the last of my flowers until fall. This is the extent of what's blooming in my garden this week. It's as if the plants feel the need to give it one last push before giving up until cooler weather.
The Last Sunflower

Wind was the cause of the premature death of my sunflower stand. Luckily, I snapped this photo the day before. There were no buds, so perhaps the wind ended a prolonged demise. One thing I love about sunflowers that I don't find in cacti flowers; as the season moves on, the sunflowers get larger. Cactus flowers get smaller.

Catharanthus roseus

Sometimes identified as Vinca, there really is a difference. I find the simplicity of these flowers very appealing, and that white is really pure white!

Gymnocalycium monvillei

My educated guess last year as to the species of the cactus turned out to be right. However, rather than a few years away from blooming, this cactus came through with an early flower this past week!

Their last 'push' for the summer. Heck, when we lived in Tucson years ago, all that bloomed in our garden was the Palo Verde trees...and tons of seed pods on the ground LOL

My Green Thumb today is all hibiscus. Stop by, won't you? If you have time.

Yep, the summer heat has hit here too... we're hovering around 104 or 105... not as high as yours, but hot enough for all practical purposes... The gymno is a jewel...

I love the blooming cactus pictures. :) They're something that I don't see a lot of here in AL, especially because I'm lazy with indoor plants. I do have a succulent bird feeder I've been working on this year, we'll see if I can overwinter it safely. :)

The sunflower is beautiful. I have fallen for them again this year. Don't know why I haven't planted them in years as they really are stunning. Sorry you lost your stand. The vinca is a trooper when it comes to withstanding heat and drought and it is such a delicate looking flower. The cactus bloom is sooo pretty too. A nice surprise. Can't really blame the bloomers for giving it up for a while. I would too in that heat! We have a heat advisory for tomorrow and Tuesday. Highs in the mid 90's but heat indexes to 105. I know it sounds like we are wimps, but that humidity can make you ill in a hurry. Hope your heat dosen't last too much longer.

Don't you just sort of sigh when the last of a spring or summer annual does it last hurrah of the season? I do. Lovely shot of the sunflower...always a treat for me to visit your lovely blog and feast my eyes on your fine photos.

Love the Periwinkle here too...so hardy! You know I love stuff that takes minimal water and care...I like to hand cut the periwinkle so it always looks full and never too severely trimmed...

I love sunflowers too...but I often forget to plant them in my garden. Luckily there are big sunflower fields not far away, so I can always go there if I want a bouquet.
